Bonjour parents!

Wow, it’s October!  We have all made it through one month of school.  Génial!

Just some reminders for tonight’s homework and for throughout this week:

  • The practice words for this week in the Pré-dictée are la, ma, sa, ta.  Please fill this out five times each in the pré-dictée cahier.  If you ever need a reference for what words we are currently focusing on, please refer to the Pre-dictee page where the most recent words will be at the bottom of the list.
  • Please continue to raise Marcheton money!  We’re nearly there, and almost everyone in the class has a t-shirt.  It would be awesome if everyone could attend the Walkathon wearing their fabulous yellow t-shirt.

Weekend Updates & Reminders

Bonjour parents,

Here are just a couple of updates and reminders for the weekend!

  • There is a new sound in the livret rouge.  Please let your child show it to you, and if they’re feeling like it, the other sounds that they’ve learned from the start, as well!
  • We had our daily dictée on Friday!  Students were asked to neatly write out their first and last name once, as neatly as possible.  They weren’t able to go home over the weekend, but will be sent next week for you to verify their work, and to once again sign it.  I will be sure to send a reminder when they eventually do go home.
  • We have Library once again on Monday.  If they borrowed a book, please make sure your child remembers to bring it back so we can return them and take out new books!

October is fast approaching!  One month down, and we’re all doing great so far!  :)

Week of Sept. 26-30

Another busy week of first grade has passed!  Here’s a quick recap of the things we did and learned.

For Français, we learned about the special “é” sound.  We focused on words that contained the sound “c/k”, “l” and “e”.  We also wrote a simple story together in our Histoires cahier (stories workbook).  As a class, we came up with possible characters and possible settings, and voted together for the character and place that would be in our story.  In honour of Terry Fox, our story ended up being about him. Terry Fox cours aux écoles de Canada.  Il cours avec les animaux! Quels animaux?  Students decided individually which animals he ran with!

For Les Mathématiques, we have nearly wrapped up our unit on les régularités (patterns).  We incorporated what we learned about patterns to the season of fall, by creating patterns with fall and school related objects, like: apples, leaves, and pencils!  We learned about how we can associate the alphabet and letters to the patterns that we create.  They were challenged to create their very own régularité with everything they have learned so far about patterns.

For La réligion, we finished up the month with Mother Teresa of Calcutta.  We also learned about how Mary said “yes” to Jesus and was excited to do his will, even though Joseph was unsure.  We also read a story about how Jesus was the perfect son, but how no one but Him can be that perfect.  They were asked to reflect on why Jesus was so perfect: they concluded that it was because he always did what his earthly parents (Mary and Joseph) asked of him, what God asked of him, and he probably never disobeyed his teachers at school, either!

For Les sciences humaines, we learned about personal space and keeping our hands to ourselves.  We discussed why it’s important to make sure that we, and the others around us, are comfortable.  With the Terry Fox Run that happened this week, we learned about him, how he grew up practically next door to us, and the reason why he wanted to run across the country.  We also got together with our Grade 5F Buddies to do a fun Action de Grâce (Thanksgiving) activity together!  Together, they discussed the things they were grateful for, and created beautiful couronnes (wreaths).

For Les sciences, we delved into our unit of seasons!  We brainstormed together the differences between summer and fall, then winter and spring.  We distinguished specific weather, holidays, and activities that we do during each particular season.  In this way, we were also able to review a lot of good holiday-themed vocabulary together!

And of course, we had Library, Music, and Gym classes throughout the week.

We also created a new signal for classroom quiet together!  Try saying “La chute” (pronounced: la shoot — meaning “waterfall” in English) and see what their response is!  :)

We had a lot of fun together this week!  I hope we have another great time together next week  :)

Thurs Sept. 29 Reminders

Bonjour tout le monde!

Just a reminder that tomorrow is our Terry Fox Run!  For tomorrow, we will have…

  • Non uniform day: students should come to school wearing something comfortable — after all, we’ll be running a few laps together!
  • Two dollar donations: everyone should come with two dollars ready to donate for our Terry Fox fundraising!

Please also note that tonight’s Pré-dictée homework has been excluded.  We did it today in class!  Please continue to help your child with their one page a day in the cahier jaune, and to ask them to tell you about the new sound in their livret rouge.

Weekend Reminders

Bonjour parents,

It was great to see everyone that attended the Back to School BBQ!  I hope everyone had a good time, and a hot dog or two!

Just some reminders over the weekend…

  • Students have added a new sound to their livret rouge!  While I know that students are not typically assigned homework over the weekend,  Madame Pizzolon and I would like it if students just practiced the new sound and hand gesture they learned.  No writing required, just a quick two minute review of the latest sound and action!
  • We sent home our Dictée workbooksplease sign them to verify that your child has correctly completed it, and be sure to place them once more in the envelopes to bring back to school :)
  • We have Library on Monday afternoon!  Please make sure that your child has a suitable book bag with them, so that they are able to borrow books from the library.  Please refer to the Master Post under “Library Days” for a more specific description of the kind of book bag they require.
  • Please continue to raise Marcheton money!  We would love it if every child could raise at least $65 dollars so that we can all have an amazing yellow t-shirt to wear during the walk!
  • For all those who indicated that they were available to walk with Grade 1F during theMarcheton, I have contacted the parents that I’ve (randomly) selected.  The 6 parents that I’ve e-mailed will walk with another teacher and Madame Pizzolon, for a total of 8 adults to walk with Grade 1F.
  • Please also note that I’ll be sending out a general e-mail regarding Parent Readers. For those who don’t know, Parent Readers come to the school every so often to come read with the students in the hall during class time, to either help improve or challenge their reading ability.  I have 2 parents already pre-selected, but I am in need of another 2.  If this is something you feel up to the task for, please let me know.  All the same, I will also be sending out that e-mail over the next couple of days.

Students are still having some trouble remembering to bring their envelope back to school every morning — and some have also forgotten to to bring them home!  Unfortunately I have found a couple of envelopes left behind at the school either by the hallway hooks, on or within their desks.  It is extremely important for our learning during the day that the envelope comes back with all of the contents.  I’m sure this will get easier for all of us as the year goes on, but until then, I will continue to give the same reminders about envelopes at school — and a gentle reminder at home would be a huge help, too!

Week of Sept 19-23

Here’s a recap of our week!

In Français, we learned the “I”, “S”, and “A” sound!  We reviewed all week on these sounds, learned new French vocabulary that contained these sounds, and three new hand gestures for “S”, “A”, and “T”!  We practiced neatly writing our names for our very first Dictée test and continued to not only write these letters out neatly, but also identify pictures that contained the sounds.

For Les mathématiques, we continued with our unit on patterns, which is called une régularité or une suite en français!  We practiced making patterns with pearls and coloured circles,  and learned how we can also associate numbers to patterns!  We even made bracelets d’amitié, also known as friendship bracelets, and applied our newly gained math knowledge by using colour patterns for the “accessories”, and even combined this activity with our “C’est quoi un bon ami?” story from les sciences humaines!

For La réligion, students absolutely loved the story of Adam and Eve!  Together, we read aloud the story of how God created Adam in his perfect world, then Eve.  Then we learned about how Satan became the Devil, and how he tried and succeeded in getting Adam and Eve to sin.  We reflected on the importance of following God’s instructions, and why it is important to obey what God, our parents, and our teachers tell us!

For Les sciences humaines, also known as “social studies”, we focused on good classroom behaviour and how to interact with our classmates.  We talked about the importance of sharing, how to ask politely, and wait for our turn.  Students were asked to reflect on the importance of having and keeping a good attitude, even if someone else is having a bad day and being a little sour to us!  We then read a story about what it means to be a friend, which we later tied to our bracelets d’amitié math activity!

Our large focus over the course of these last few days has been acquiring an understanding of French words and sounds.  Reinforcing good classroom behaviour has also been a very big part of our day.  What with so much time devoted to these things, as well as our math, we haven’t yet had an opportunity to begin our science unit — though we HAVE discussed the subjects of seasons changing, the weather, and also talked about our last day of summer turning to our first day of fall, which is all part of the coming science units.

In addition to all of this, we had our regular Library, Music, and PE classes during the week.  We also attended an “Ici on parle français” assembly where our K-4 French stream students were encouraged to speak French in and out of the classroom, for the chance to win some prizes!  We also met with our Grade 5F buddies and attended the monthly mass this week.

I think it would be a very good thing if you were to ask your child what they learned about what it means to listen, take turns, and to respect others.  We discuss it often in class, but as I believe that parents are the first and primary educators of their children, it would be a great help to remain consistent, by reinforcing these positive discussions and encouraging positive behaviour in school, as well as participation!  Everyone has the most fun in class when everyone is having fun and participating!  :)

Thurs Sept. 22 Reminders

Mes chers parents,

I have sent an e-mail regarding the cahier jaune criteria. I will include it once again on the blog, for those who would like to be reminded  :)

Cahier jaune criteria

  • Crayons for colouring only (no felts)
  • Pencils for tracing and writing only (no pen)
  • Children should use life-like colours for the pictures, in order to accustom them to the appropriate colours for the real-life objects
  • Colour WITHIN the lines — no sloppiness, please!
  • Trace and write NEATLY: use the finger as a spacing tool (“doigt comme espace“), letters must touch the TOP line and the BOTTOM line, like in the figure below.

Please note: it is highly important that the children receive guidance as they complete their homework. In this way, the correct criteria is reinforced at home, and it helps them get into the good habit of following this specified criteria. Thank you all so much for your help in this area!

Another note: please also note that I will not be including a copy of our classroom schedule on the blog, simply because, in primary, there is no fixed timetable. We do have certain things that happen every week, such as Library, Music, and PE, (all of which is included on the Master Post, though they too sometimes change), but everything else is likely to fluctuate. We often experience interruptions with assemblies, paraliturgies, and other things. As mentioned before, I’ll include a summary of the activities and things that we learned over the week, so this will help you understand what our days looked like.  :)

We pasted another sound in the livret rouge! Please take a few minutes to practice the sound and associated hand action that goes with the sound “A”.  :)

Students have their Pré-dictée cahier with them in their envelopes. Please help them to practice writing out their first name another five times (neatly!), because tomorrow is our first Dictée test!

Students are doing a great job raising money for our Walkathon aka Marcheton (en français).  If your child raises $65 or more, they may bring their pledge form to school to collect their fabulous yellow t-shirt!  Please note that money is not required at this time.  Please do not send the money with your child until the day of the Marcheton.  Merci!

Lastly, students went home with Hot Lunch forms today. Please indicate what your child is ordering, and bring back the forms and money by the indicated date.

Wed Sept. 21 Updates

Bonjour à tous! We had another great day at school.  Here are a couple of updates.


  • Livret rouge: students have received this booklet today.  They will practice saying the sound, French words that contain the sound, and will also show their parent(s) the action that was associated with it in class.
  • Cahier jaune: students will do ONE more page tonight (no more than one!)
  • Pré-dictée: this has been excluded from tonight’s homework. Instead, students will write their names out another 5 times during class tomorrow.

Scholastic Book Orders
Students have taken French Scholastic Book forms home today in their envelopes.  There is absolutely no pressure to purchase anything, but if you or your child are interested in anything, please fill out the form, include the money for it, and place them both in your child’s envelope.

Library Bags
Library only takes place on Monday, but I think it is best to remind parents as early as possible to make sure the children have suitable book bags for library.  We will be making our second trip next week, so please ensure that your child has a durable, waterproof book bag by next Monday.

Mass tomorrow
Tomorrow, we have our monthly mass!  Please ensure that your child brings with them their sweater or sweater vest so that we can look our best!

Rather than write a blog post every single night, I will summarize the activities and the things we learned at the end of every week.  I will do my best to publish these posts in a timely manner, for you to peruse over the weekend!
